Why Is My Website Not Showing on Google? (7 Reasons, Checked in Order)

By Devrex Digital·September 12, 2026·7 min read

Your website is live. You search your business name and it isn't there. This is one of the most common and most alarming problems a business owner encounters, and it almost always has one of seven causes. Work through them in this order — they're arranged by how likely they are, and the first three take about two minutes each.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓ Search site:yourdomain.com first — it tells you instantly whether you're indexed at all.
  • ✓ A noindex tag left on after launch is the single most common cause.
  • ✓ New sites take days to weeks to appear; this is normal, not a fault.
  • ✓ Being indexed and ranking are different problems with different fixes.

Check 1: Are You Indexed At All?

Type site:yourdomain.com into Google, replacing the domain with yours. This shows every page Google has indexed from your site. If results appear, you are indexed and your problem is ranking, not indexing — skip to the last section. If nothing appears, Google doesn't have your site yet, and the causes below apply.

Check 2: The Noindex Tag Nobody Removed

This is the most common cause by a wide margin. During development, sites are deliberately blocked from search engines so unfinished pages don't get indexed. On launch, someone has to remove that block — and frequently nobody does. Right-click your homepage, choose View Page Source, and search for 'noindex'. If it's there, that single line is why you're invisible. On platform builds, check for a 'discourage search engines' setting in your admin.

Check 3: Your robots.txt Is Blocking Everything

Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt directly. If you see 'Disallow: /' under 'User-agent: *', you are telling every search engine to ignore your entire site. This is another development-stage setting that gets left in place, and it has exactly the same effect as a noindex tag.

Check 4: The Site Is Simply Too New

If the site launched within the last few weeks, being absent is normal rather than broken. Google has to discover, crawl, and index a new domain, and that process takes days to weeks. Submitting your sitemap in Search Console speeds it up considerably — which is the next check.

Check 5: Search Console Isn't Set Up

Google Search Console is free and it's the only place that tells you what Google actually thinks of your site. Set it up, verify ownership, submit your sitemap, and use the URL Inspection tool on your homepage. It will tell you directly whether the page is indexed, and if not, frequently why. Most site owners discover their actual problem within five minutes of doing this.

  • — site:yourdomain.com — are you indexed at all?
  • — View page source — any noindex tag?
  • — yourdomain.com/robots.txt — any Disallow: /?
  • — Site age — launched in the last few weeks?
  • — Search Console — set up, sitemap submitted, URL inspected?
  • — Canonical tags — pointing somewhere unexpected?
  • — Manual action — check Search Console's Security & Manual Actions tab

Check 6: Canonical Tags Pointing Elsewhere

A canonical tag tells Google which version of a page is the real one. If yours points to a different URL — a staging domain, an old site, or another page entirely — Google may index that instead of the page you're looking at. This happens surprisingly often after migrations, where canonical tags still reference the old domain. Search your page source for 'canonical' and check where it points.

Check 7: A Manual Action

Rare, but worth ruling out. If Google has determined your site violates its spam policies, it can apply a manual action that removes pages from results entirely. Search Console has a Security & Manual Actions tab that tells you plainly whether one exists. If it's clean, this isn't your problem.

If You Are Indexed But Not Ranking

This is a completely different problem with a completely different answer. Being indexed means Google has your page. Ranking means Google thinks it deserves to be shown above other pages for a given search. The gap between those two states is filled by content quality, relevance, and — most significantly for newer sites — authority earned through links from other sites. No amount of technical fixing produces rankings if the issue is that nobody links to you yet.

FAQs

Typically days to a few weeks, depending on how quickly Google discovers the domain. Submitting a sitemap through Search Console meaningfully accelerates it. Absence after a couple of months usually indicates a technical block rather than normal delay.
